Waitangi, Paihai

Waitangi is the most significant Maoiri heritage area just 1 km outside of Paihai.  This is where the Waintangia Treaty was signed between the Maori leaders and the British colonisers. The treaty gave Maori's rights to the land, trade etc.  The above building houses the longest Waka, a Maori warrior boat ordinarily made out of one log of wood that had a diameter of 8 ft before the boat was chiseled out.
